Supporting the ED with point-of-care testing

Patient safety is a priority in an ED. With point-of-care testing, the doctor supports patient safety by obtaining results quickly and diagnosing patients

In the busy and sometimes overcrowded emergency department (ED), critically ill patients cannot wait. When patients present with critical symptoms, ED doctors and nurses require fast and accurate decisions. Critically ill patients need to be triaged promptly.

In the ED at the DRK Hospital Group in Thüringen, Germany, ED Director, Axel Plessman, highly prioritizes patient safety.

Mr. Plessmann knows that by keeping the workflow smooth, critically ill patients do not need to wait in the ED for long. When the patient triage is efficient and accurate, Mr. Plessmann can initiate the diagnosis and treatment as quickly as possible.

How can you sustain patient safety in the workflow of ED caregivers?

Watch the video and see how Mr. Plessmann and his team use point-of-care testing to enhance patient safety in the ED.

Mr. Plessmann explains that with point-of-care testing, he can obtain blood gas and other important results quicker. These results include creatinine, which allows him to identify patients at risk of acute kidney injury before sending them to a CT scan. When he receives the results quicker, he can rule out a condition quicker.
